The Mass Media

Are you affected by it?

What exactly is mass media?

Like it or not, mass media is prevalent around us.
Some of it produces useful information that we all could benefit from, otherwise they're all merely a waste of resources that serves no social benefits other than for the generation of profit for the group that is trying to get their message across.
This of course, is my opinion of the mass media.

A powerful tool in today's world to convince large crowds to believe what you have got to offer or write about.

do you have a favorite book? or a favorite newspaper to read? or a favorite song?
How did you come across it? and what make you like what you like?

Do you pick up a newspaper to read, watch Television, listen the the radio or surf the internet once day?

some way, some how, the mass media has influence our thoughts and ideas of the rights or wrongs. Well, I'm a believer of John Locke's theory that we're all born in a Tabula Rasa, or a blank state, and our minds are being constructed to think and act what the world is telling us is right to do. The mass media forms part of the information we have in our brains, and aids us with our conversation with people. Most of our decisions, beliefs and values are based on what we know for a fact, our experience or our assumptions of things; and all these are based on what the mass media portrays and fortifies.

Do you not agree with me on the influence of the mass media? or do you think that the mass media isn't as powerful as I have made it out to be?
shout it out here!

Mass media, hmm, my FAVORITE invention!

I raise a hundred hands in agreeing with you that mass media is such a powerful and influential tool! What is the world today without mass media?!

Everything we do today has to do with media!
    THE MEDIA CONNECTS PEOPLE!

In the society today, you want to be known, you want to be famous, you want to make it big out there be it whether as a celebrity, brand, product, you NEED people to know what you have! so, in a way, mass media just HELPS you! it SCREAMS out to large masses of people telling them about YOU YOU YOU and YOU!

so, believe it or not, mass media is a powerful tool. don't ever underestimate it. if you do, you're just going to lose out!

so as it is, way to go Tommy! Mass media influences anyone, whether it is in a bad way or not! (:

  • Hi Matilda,
I was just wondering after reading your comment that "mass media influences anyone, whether it is in a bad way or not", do you think that the mass media itself is influenced by people and the environment outside it? ie. the rich and powerful?

after all, someone is needed to sustain the mass media from functioning, so do you think the mass media is a mouth piece for the powers from above to spread their ideas onto people like us??

  • Hi tommy's thoughts,
mass media is influential and we cannot deny that we are taking every single bit of commercials into our everyday life. Mass media has already taken root in our lives and is all too important to be missed out. I bet without the TV, Internet and other mass media forms, we will be back to the caveman period of time. Through the Internet, we are able to find vast amount of information that we need.

    Nice music =)

  • Although I did agree that mass media is an absolute tool in influencing everyone, the sad truth remains that mass media is highly controlled by not only the rich but the powerful too, D:

The rich exercises its control through using money while the powerful exercises it control through authority, deciding what is shown and what is not.

the sad and blatant truth with controls the media society.

  • hmm.. but do you think that the mass media could be a tool for common man to get their voice heard too? there are columns that are dedicated for people to post their comments too? do you think that their views are actually heard?

  • I believe that the mass media is quite as powerful as you make it out to be.. but at the same time, it is also a tool that we really have the power to subvert with our own will.
This is especially true if you consider how accessible Internet media is, and how much control we can exert over it.

Mediums such as blogs give us the ability to say whatever we want, in a place where anyone can reach so long as they want or know how to. And it is a liberating medium because it puts a voice to people who wouldn't otherwise be able to influence 'bigger' mass media such as television or newspapers.
Then again, even those are changing as they increasingly become a people's medium - TV shows often ask viewers to SMS their messages or feedback to the show, which in turn get broadcasted as well.

  • the mass media is my career. as someone who helps to shape messages that goes out to consumers, i have become skeptical and suspicious of anything the media says. So what u see may not be what u get... angel-blogspot.

  • The mass media indeed does have effect on people. Some might not like to admit it, but even their actions are occasionally affected by it without them knowing it.

  • I agree to what An Angel says.. Mass media is a powerful tool but more often than we know, it has been abused. I've had my frens on newspaper articles before and in every article, there was sth written that wasnt true, whether a small part of it or a huge chunk. With such inaccuracy in the articles, one would believe that the story might be made up and thus putting the whole article in question.

However, common people like us might buy the story written, believing that it is true. Would this then be manipulation?

  • Hmm... Tabula Rasa. That's interesting. Yeah i agree that mass media effects everyone, especially in the age of the internet.

  • it definitely hints of manipulation there.

we're overloading with information, and sometimes we're mislead to things that we do not need. How then, do we differentiate useful media from non-useful ones? I think sometimes, we are also taught to search for media that are unnecessary or non-useful to ourselves.. terrible news...

  • Media is a business. The first form of media is daily papers. Which started in the age of print, in 1440 Johnnes Gutenberg of Germany invented the printing press.

Media is so powerful as is it is a medium of Mass Communication. Human biggest potential is to communicate our ideas through speech and that's our most "basic" purpose in this world, without even mentioning things like "self-actualization" or helping people.

Everyone uses media for different purposes. Advertiser uses it for raising awareness. Politician to pull for more supporters. Government to make public service announcements. TV Celebrities to boost their fame and popularity. Its all about AGENDA.

Media has evolved so much by today. If u think it is only for the rich and powerful, you are being naive. Many social networking sites like Facebook, Friendster, Twitter, Myspace, etc are capable of doing instant communication. US President Barrack Obama uses this opportunity during election campaign period which lead him to victory, of cause he is charismatic in his speech too. Social networking services has proved to be so effective.

Beside this there's another thing to take note of. Be it "Bad" or "Good" publicity, it is all PUBLICITY. Always, positive publicity is favorable or preferable to many. Yet, some people can be in the good light of negative publicity too. For example, Paris Hilton had made so much news, but instead of causing her an arm or a toe, Hilton's Hotel Empire grew and all her doings has been a free publicity for their business.

In my opinion, the type of media mix tools to be chosen is also worth considering about. Newspaper, Magazines, TV, Radio, Out-Of-Home (OOH) and Internet. Never belittle the power in any of these media.

    Thank you.

    Thank you.

  • Has anyone thought of blogs being the upcoming form of mass media? I don't mean now, of course. But in the future? I mean, blogs now have advertisments, earn money, and provide information that typical print media does not. There has been increasing number of newspaper articles talking about events that first appeared on blogs! While the mass media is influential, we should not underestimate other forms of media as well.
